One in six Belgian families cannot make ends meet financially and goes into the red at the end of the month. This is evident from a study into the financial situation of households in Europe. Helga from Mechelen, the retired couple Jef and Mireille, and business analyst Jan – with a net salary of 3,600 euros – have difficulty making ends meet every month. “With the prices they charge for a retirement home these days, I fear we will one day end up on the street.”
