For the protagonist, it is only “any statistics”, but another milestone for the transfer market database: All 700 games from Frank Schmidt as a coach of 1. FC Heidenheim can now be called up.
“Something else will dig out every year. If you are a coach for so long, you will find any statistics every year that seems to be great. That doesn’t matter to me at all,” said Schmidt before his anniversary game at VfL Wolfsburg. This ended with a 1-0 for the FCH and was as successful as his start around 18 years ago. On September 22, 2007, Schmidt won a 2-1 at 1. FC Normannia Gmünd in the fourth-class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg.
“I had two sweat spots as big as the map of Germany on the armpits. In the end I was of course mega happy that the team of this derby, which was always hot against Gmünd, I knew that as a player,” he recalled his premiere last year. 699 games later the FCH is in the Bundesliga in its second year and made it into the intermediate round in the Conference League.
Then as now: the same attitude. “Whether it is the 700th game, the second or fifth – nothing has changed for me. In each of these 700 my claim was to win with my team,” emphasized Schmidt. His contract is valid until 2027, so one or the other game will be added.
