Who is Marius Borg Høiby and what role does he play in the Norwegian royal family?
Marius Borg Høiby sees the light of day on January 13, 1997. His mother is Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, a waitress, his father is Morton Borg, an advertising seller who is stuck in prison for drug-related offenses at the time of his son’s birth. Mette-Marit (this Tuesday, August 19, she will be 52) had a short-lived affair with Borg, and she only raises her son.
In 1999 she met Crown Prince Haakon Magnus (now 52). Two years later, four -year -old Marius sees his mother in marriage and becoming a crown princess. Marriage is not without controversy: the simple descent of Mette-Marit, her wild life, the fact that she is a single mother, and that the father of her child is a convicted criminal, many Norwegians consider her unsuitable as a future queen of Norway.
Marius was a very funny and incredibly sweet child
Marius Borg Høiby does not become a member of the Royal family of Norway after the marriage of his mother. He is a ‘normal’ burger and will not perform official tasks. His half-sister, Princess Ingrid Alexandra (now 21 years old), and his half-brother, the now 19-year-old Prince Sverre Magnus are. They are number two and three respectively in the line of succession.
“Marius was a very funny and incredibly sweet child,” says Kroonprins Haakon about his stepson in a biography that comes out in the summer of 2023 on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday and that the prince participated in. “He loved physical activities: he was able to ski downhill very early, enjoyed going out, water skiing or surfing, things like that.” The contrast with his own youth and himself could not be bigger, says Haakon in the book. “Marius challenged me to those physical activities.”
Bio page removed
It is no secret that Høiby certainly struggles during his teenage years with his role within a family and family that are in the spotlight and in which he plays such a special role. Youth sin ends up on front pages at home and abroad. When Høiby turns 20, Mette-Marit writes one open letter To her son and she indicates how she saw him grow up under those circumstances. She asks media to keep a distance.
There is also one on the eve of that 20th birthday press statement From: Høiby, who, as announced in the United States, is going to study (economy), will not perform official tasks for the Royal Family, he will be present at family facilities. To honor his wish to live outside the eye of the public, the page with his biography on the official website of the royal family is removed. The press statement ends with the question of whether Media want to respect Høiby’s decision.
After his return to Norway, Høiby has numerous jobs – from assistant to fashion designer. He can often be found in Oslo’s nightlife, he regularly gets the gossip magazines, usually not in the most charming positions. Høiby lives close to his mother and the crown prince: in his own house on the site of the crown -prince’s skaugum just outside Oslo.

Loose young man
Since the summer of last year, the trade and walk of Høiby has been below a magnifying glass. At the beginning of August, Høiby will be arrested, questioned and charged with suspicion of abuse and threat of his girlfriend (now ex) and the causes of vandalism in her apartment. In a press statement To Norwegian media, ten days later, Høiby confesses the misconduct and says that it had been under the influence of alcohol and cocaine that conscious day. In the statement he points to the many years of mental problems he has, and he says he and for his addictions. He not only apologizes, but also to his family.
Shortly this, another ex-girlfriend from Høiby opens a book about how he behaved during their relationship. She testified – on social media and in Norwegian media – about how Høiby hit her, tried to stifle and caused vandalism. This creates the image of a loose and violent young man in media.
The issue is often labeled as a ‘private matter’
Not much later it is announced that the police are not only investigating the incident in the apartment, but also Høiby’s connections with criminals. In mid -September the authorities make a raid on a holiday home where Høiby and friends stay. The catch: drugs and a possible illegal weapon. The authorities also announce that allegations have been added and that another four other victims have reported.
Høiby will be picked up again in November last year. He is now also accused of raping a person who was unconscious or could not resist for another reason. The authorities later specify this by saying that it is rape without sexual intercourse.
Communication
The palace is until then very reluctant to respond to the events. The issue is often labeled as a “private matter” or “no comments” are given. Earlier in the summer of last year, Kroonprins Haakon called the allegations against Høiby ‘very serious’ for television cameras. Furthermore, he does not want to say much as long as the investigation lasts. But Norwegian media know how to reveal that the palace was warned at the beginning of August prior to Høiby’s arrest, after which Mette-Marit informed her son of this.
Petar Sekulic, one of Marius Borg Høiby’s lawyers, calls it in Norwegian media “a very serious indictment,” and he indicates that his client will cooperate with the police. Høiby denies being guilty of the majority of the charges, with the exception of the act of violence against a friend that he has already admitted. The Public Prosecution Service, through the Attorney General, did not wipe it on Monday and warned that although Høiby is part of the royal family, this should not mean that he is being treated milder or stricter.
The palace is sufficient this Monday with the announcement: “It is up to the courts to deal with this case and make a decision. We have nothing to do with this to add. “
