The four politicians had traveled to Kyiv by train. There they wanted to speak to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj and Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal. According to a Polish government spokesman, the trip had been planned in the strictest secrecy in consultation with the EU and NATO.

The Ukrainian capital has been shelled since the Russian war of aggression began on February 24.
