Harry Styles finds emotional words about Liam Payne’s death and talks about the pressure of public expectations when grieving.

Harry Styles also spoke about a former bandmate and friend of his on his press tour for his new album “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” – and found very emotional words.

One Direction and the death of Liam Payne

Specifically, Styles met with Zane Lowe for an interview for Apple Music – and spoke publicly in detail for the first time about the death of Liam Payne.

Payne and Styles were part of the group One Direction along with Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson. The boy band was founded in 2010 on the British talent show “The X Factor” and split up in 2016. Afterwards, all members pursued solo careers.

Then in October 2024 came the shock: Payne fell to his death from the balcony on the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The band then published a joint statement on the One Direction Instagram account, which was actually already closed.

The individual members also contacted their fans. At the time, Styles wrote on Instagram: “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honor to help him do that. Liam lived very openly, wore his heart on his sleeve, and had a life energy that was contagious. He was warm, helpful, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever be among the best years of my life. I will always miss him, my dear friend.”

While the other members of the boy band have spoken out again in recent months, Styles has not made any further statements. For example, Louis Tomlinson told UK Rolling Stone in 2025 and emphasized that the 15th anniversary of One Direction was awkward now that Liam Payne had died. Zayn Malik also showed his sympathy and dedicated a song to his former bandmate on his 2024 tour.

About grief and public expectations

Now the “Sign of the Times” interpreter also spoke about his friend’s death in his interview with Lowe. He said he found it difficult to deal with grief because he was overwhelmed by the public perception of his grief – especially because people expected him to process it a certain way. “There was a time after his death where I was really struggling to accept how strange it is when people kind of take ownership of some of your grief,” Harry Styles said.

In the interview, the Brit also spoke again about his friendship with Liam Payne and emphasized how difficult it was to lose a friend – especially one who was so similar to him in many ways. “Someone with a good heart who just wanted to be great,” Styles told Zane Lowe. At the same time, he admitted that his bandmate’s death showed him how he looks at his own life and what he wants to do with it.

Overall, his statement was quite short, but clearly emotional. The British singer often had to swallow and choose his words carefully.

Processing using the new album?

Perhaps he has also processed his emotions in his new album “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” – which will be released on March 6, 2026.
