Hard lessons for Volendam in the Eredivisie: “At this level, those mistakes are punished”

It was a disappointing evening for FC Volendam to visit Sparta. Wim Jonk’s team lost with hard numbers (4-0), but especially the way in which the goals were conceded was typical. “We gave away the goals too easily”, was the logical conclusion of captain Damon Mirani.

“We have to be much sharper defensively,” Mirani continues in front of ESPN’s camera. “In the second half we are not well covered in the sixteen. Those moments are simply punished at this level. It is important that we quickly learn from our mistakes.”

The defender was not dissatisfied with the field game. “We have also created quite a few opportunities. It is sour that you concede that first goal in such a simple way with that long ball from Olij. We should have just used our chances.”

“Judging by the first half, it is certainly painful that we did not score a goal,” trainer Wim Jonk told ESPN afterwards. “We certainly have five hundred percent chances, you have to use at least one or two of them. You actually give away a goal from your own chance. We were not good when the keeper switched quickly, of course that should never happen.”

According to Jonk, his team did not get into the game after the break, especially after the 2-0. “I think we are falling short, because the goals were too easy. That is a shame, because it does not do justice to our first half. In the end it is 4-0 on the board, so what do you have to moan about?”
