Hansi Flick announces German World Cup squad

The wait is over: national coach Hansi Flick announced his official World Cup squad on Thursday afternoon.

sport.de shows the announcement 12:00 o’clock streaming live (the video opens in the picture above).

Ten days before the start of the World Cup finals in Qatar, Hansi Flick will end the guesswork on the DFB campus and announce his 26-man squad. The national coach had revealed in advance that there would be “one or two surprises”.

But it is also clear that Flick’s hands are tied when it comes to some personal details, as one or the other national player will miss the tournament due to injuries. Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, for example, a regular in attack, is missing in Qatar because of a syndesmosis ligament tear. Wolfsburg’s Lukas Nmecha also suffered a short-term injury, so one or the other player should be included in the squad at short notice.

Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko and Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug, who are among the best German attackers in the current Bundesliga season, can hope.

Moukoko’s teammates Mats Hummels and Marco Reus as well as Eintracht Frankfurt’s Mario Götze are among the most hotly discussed personal details in advance. They are all still hoping for a nomination. For Marco Reus, history could meanwhile repeat itself: The BVB captain missed the 2014 World Cup triumph and the 2016 European Championship due to injury. He had voluntarily renounced the 2020 European Championship due to persistent problems.

Flick’s predecessor Joachim Löw had always caused one or two surprises in the run-up to his three World Cup finals, in which he was responsible for the DFB selection as national coach. In 2018, for example, he had Leroy Sané, then still in the service of Manchester City, canceled at short notice. However, the Bayern star is definitely set for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
