Yannick Hanfmann put an exclamation mark at the end of the tennis year and reached the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Athens.
The Karlsruher defeated the American Marcos Giron 7:6 (7:3), 6:4, and none other than tennis giant Novak Djokovic is waiting for the Davis Cup player in the semi-finals.
On Thursday evening, Hanfmann was particularly strong on his own serve. After missing three set points, the 33-year-old won the first set in the tiebreak. The world number 117 also played confidently afterwards: the break to 5:3 in the second set was like a preliminary decision.
Hanfmann’s big goal of reaching the top 100 and thus direct participation in the Australian Open is still possible. The semi-final against “Djoker” will take place on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
