Hanfmann and Otte master the first hurdle in Madrid

Tennis pro Oscar Otte (Cologne) has reached the second round of the ATP Masters in Madrid. In his opening match on Wednesday, the man from Cologne beat the Russian Pawel Kotow 6:3, 4:6, 6:4 and celebrated only his fifth victory on the tour this year. In the second round Otte meets the number 18 seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

Compatriot Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe) also cleared his opening hurdle. The 31-year-old defeated Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 3. Hanfmann, ranked 108th in the world rankings, had previously qualified for the clay court tournament. Lorenzo Musetti (Italy/No. 15) is now waiting for Hanfmann.

In addition to Otte and Hanfmann, Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) are also at the start in Madrid. Zverev, seeded 13th, meets Roberto Carballes Baena (Spain) in the second round a week after his first round in Munich. Last year he only failed in the final against world number two Carlos Alcaraz. The two Grand Slam record champions Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are injured.
