A total of six boats were removed this morning and this afternoon, a spokesperson for the province told NH when asked. “As a province we are concerned with illegally moored boats, the municipality is concerned with the illegal habitation of the boats.”
Of the six boats towed away, four were completely abandoned, an official from the municipality of Uithoorn said. There were people present on two boats, including the last boat. “One man was found on the other boat. He, like the other residents, left on his own.”
Removal of boats announced
The boats will not be removed overnight, the province and municipality emphasize. “The owners of these boats were already notified in October,” says the municipal official.
She explains that since November 1 it has been prohibited to live on a moored boat along the Amsteldijk. This rule was introduced because the so-called ‘water nomads’ – often migrant workers – had been causing nuisance for a long time.
After this nuisance led to a physical collision between the ‘water nomads’ and local residents in July, the municipality promised to take stricter action.
