Goalkeeper Sergey Hernández will leave the handball Bundesliga club SC Magdeburg after the 2025/26 season.
The 30-year-old Spanish international decided to continue his path from the summer of 2026 at another club, the Champions League winner said on Wednesday.
“After careful consideration, I made the difficult decision to start a new chapter in my career,” said Hernández. He left the background to his farewell: “Out of respect for everyone involved, I will tell the reasons and details in due course. I hope you can understand and respect this decision.”
Hernández switched from Benfica Lisbon to Magdeburg in 2023 and celebrated numerous successes with the SCM. In two seasons he won the IHF Super Globe, the German Championship, the DHB Cup and finally the premier class.
SCM trainer Bennet Wiegert emphasized that Hernández would have liked to have been kept. “With Sergey, a player leaves us who kept keeping our back free over time,” said Wiegert: “We are extremely grateful to him, for everything he has brought into the team for everything that he has sporty, but above all.”
