In September, Stefan Kretzschmar was released from his position as sports director at Füchse Berlin. Now the ex-professional opened up about his expulsion from the handball Bundesliga team.
“The farewell wasn’t my wish. You don’t just put a tick on it. You sit at home for the first week and have to come to terms with it,” said Kretzschmar in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
The 52-year-old continued: “I have a bit of distance now, but of course I still look emotionally at the foxes. It will probably always stay that way after our shared history.”
Kretzschmar has now come to terms with his departure from the capital club.
“It’s okay,” said the former national player: “I realize that it goes on for everyone. For the players, for the club, for the club management. And also for me. In the end, everyone is somehow replaceable. It should be the case that no one is bigger than the club.”
Kretzschmar is relieved that the separation did not end in a mud fight and that everyone involved behaved professionally.
“The first week after the double separation was a bit tough for Bob (Managing Director Hanning, editor’s note), but now – after seven wins in a row – things have smoothed over and we’re back on the agenda,” emphasized Kretzschmar, emphasizing: “Unpopular decisions are sometimes part of it when you’re in charge.”
Kretzschmar was “angry and disappointed”
Nevertheless, the TV expert admitted: “Of course at first I was angry, disappointed and had little understanding for this decision with immediate effect. But it wasn’t the case that I no longer found any emotional support.”
Together with coach Jaron Siewert, Stefan Kretzschmar had to leave Füchse Berlin at the beginning of September. Nicolej Krickau was hired as the duo’s successor.
The personnel crunch caused a lot of criticism – also because the Foxes embarrassed themselves in the first game afterwards against SC Magdeburg (32:39).
