SC Magdeburg recorded its first important title in the Bennet Wiegert era with the DHB Cup victory in 2016. This was followed by a cup triumph in 2024. This season, the SCM faces a highly demanding opponent in the cup quarter-finals: the Bundesliga table leaders face second place SG Flensburg-Handewitt.

On the way to the Final Four for the DHB Cup, SC Magdeburg has the toughest opponent on its plate, SG Flensburg-Handewitt. “We hope for our chance to find our way to Cologne,” said Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert before the quarter-final game between the Bundesliga first team and the second team from the north on Thursday (7:30 p.m. in the audio stream & live ticker from SPORT IM OSTEN).

DHB Cup quarter-finals in focus across Europe

“Our goal remains the Final Four,” emphasized Wiegert, who is particularly looking forward to the home game. “I find it more and more pleasant to play at home and hope it will be an advantage,” said the 43-year-old. He assumes that the top duel will also attract a lot of attention internationally – especially in Scandinavia, as nine players from both teams come from the far north of Europe. The German international also moved to Flensburg Marko Grgic, who came from ThSV Eisenach. Grgic, who was praised by Wiegert, became the youngest Bundesliga player with 500 goals in the important 40:39 win against champions Füchse Berlin.

The SCM has to watch out for ex-Eisenacher Marko Grgic, among other things. The 22-year-old just set a new Bundesliga record.

League game of no importance for Wiegert

That Magdeburg did that a month ago League game won 35:31 in Flensburg Wiegert no longer pays any attention. In the five games after that, so much changed with the opponent, which is why “it will be a completely different game,” said Wiegert. In Flensburg, Magdeburg had turned around a two-goal deficit at the break thanks to a significant improvement in the second half. “We had an outstanding completion rate in the second half. We need that again,” said Wiegert.
