SC Magdeburg is just one step away from reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The prerequisite on Wednesday was an ultimately sovereign 31:25 win at HC PPD Zagreb. The Elbestadt team secured second place in Group A.

SC Magdeburg defended second place in Group A of the Champions League and still has the best chance of going directly into the quarter-finals. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team won the Croatian series champions HC PPD Zagreb on Wednesday (February 22) by 31:25 (16:14).

SCM back on ball level after falling behind

Magdeburg didn’t get into the game well, were trailing behind (1:3/6.), but were able to quickly turn the game around and advance. However, the people from Elbestadt could not break away, the hosts fought for every ball, so that the SCM had to work hard for every goal. Magdeburg went into the break with a two-goal lead.

Expanded lead

Immediately after the restart, Magdeburg increased their lead to three goals for the first time (17:14/31st). But Zagreb immediately followed suit and shortened again. The SCM now gained a small lead and gradually increased it to six goals (26:20/46) and defended it until the end. Kay Smits was the best Magdeburg thrower with nine goals.
