The Füchse Berlin have extended their winning streak in the Champions League and are about to reach the quarter-finals.
The handball Bundesliga team won against the Hungarian champions One Veszprém HC 38:34 (19:18) in front of 5,720 spectators in the Max Schmeling Hall. With the ninth win in the ninth game, the Füchse remain leaders in Group A. The best Berlin throwers were Lasse Andersson with ten and Tim Freihöfer with eight goals.
In addition to the long-term injuries Fabian Wiede, Lukas Herburger, Nils Lichtlein and Leo Prantner, coach Nicolej Krickau also had to do without regular goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev (adductor injury) for a short time.
Ludwig doesn’t come into the game – but you can rely on Gidsel
The first goal of the evening belonged to Füchse Berlin, who started the encounter furiously. Too furious: the Berliners played their first attacks too hastily and thus wasted too many opportunities to switch to Veszprem. Defensively, the hosts always had problems. A fast-paced game developed in which the score was 7:8 from the Füchse perspective after ten minutes.
After the initial phase, the Berliners showed a little more patience offensively. This also relieved the pressure on their own defense, as Veszprem had fewer spaces to counterattack. However, the Hungarians stayed in the game as Füchse goalkeeper Lasse Ludwig made few saves. Consequence: Coach Krickau took his first timeout after 17 minutes when the score was 10:13 and changed the goalkeeper – Pius Joppich, who was only 19 years old, came into the game.
Krickau’s adjustments began to take effect. The foxes became more grippy. Mathias Gidsel in particular was once again almost unstoppable. The world handball player was the main factor why the Foxes even went into the half-time break with a narrow 19:18 lead.
Foxes fight their way to victory
At the start of the second half, both defensive lines appeared more solid. The Foxes continued to put in a decent performance, but while Rodrigo Corrales repeatedly made good saves for Veszprem, the home team continued to lack a good goalkeeping performance. After 40 minutes the score was 24:23 for the Foxes.
In the final quarter of an hour, Füchse keeper Ludwig was supposed to make his contribution. The 23-year-old made two saves within two minutes and, together with an outstanding Gidsel, paved the way for Berlin to take a two-goal lead (30:28) in the 49th minute.
The Berliners, supported by the audience, won the heated final phase with an impressive fighting performance – and with it the game. Because Veszprem risked everything again at the end but didn’t score any points, the encounter ended relatively clearly with 38:34.
