Halep wins Toronto Masters

Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep from Romania won the WTA Masters 1000 in Toronto. In the final, the 30-year-old beat the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets 6: 3, 2: 6, 6: 3.

The 24-year-old Maia defeated world number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) and Olympic champion Belinda Bencic (Switzerland) in the Canadian metropolis and missed her greatest career success.

For Halep it is already the third title in Canada after her successes in 2016 and 2018. The Romanian has now won a total of nine Masters tournaments in the highest category.

By winning the tournament, she climbed nine places in the world rankings and is now sixth.
