In the world of hair dyes, new innovations and the increased awareness and demands of consumers towards hair dyes are especially visible.
Now we are looking for skin- and scalp-friendly colors that do not damage the hair or the sensitive microbiome of the scalp.
The market is also driven by a clearly increased demand for, for example, different ammonia-free, natural and vegan formulations. At the same time, the EU governs the safety of cosmetics such as hair dyes with various, constantly detailed regulations.

In 2026, customers will demand to know more precisely what colors are used in hair salons or what is revealed in home color packages. This leads to the fact that brands must be able to more transparently justify their compositions and the ecological and life cycle of their products, among other things.
– Customers are clearly more aware than before. Let’s ask what is in the products, how they affect the hair, health and what happens in the long run, opens the hairdresser and hair trainer Jenni Muhonen phenomenon.

– It is no longer enough just to have a color, but to be interested in what is inside it. Cleaner, higher quality and gentler raw materials are the present moment and the future, he specifies.

– In my opinion, real professionalism is not seen in how bold a tone you create, but in what you leave undamaged, he underlines.
With the technological innovations of colors, more permanent pigments are sought with less damage.

Divers bond-building-care technologies move from a separate and separate treatment into the color, so to speak. Therefore, colors and lightening agents also help to build the bonds of the hair when coloring. In the hair dye market, you can see treating, strengthening and structural repairing molecules, peptides, ceramides and various biometical compositions.
– Healthy hair is a trend in itself, and caring and protective services go hand in hand with color, Muhonen reminds.

The color doesn’t always have to be extremely strong or the pigments aggressive: beautiful fading, softer root growth and easy maintenance are more important. A professional hairstylist knows how to consult the client already at the salon visit and plan the color treatment so that it also grows beautifully.
– The techniques seek end results that overgrow beautifully and require less maintenance, Muhonen says.

In addition to longer-lasting permanent colors, various light colors and tints are also becoming more common.
– Instead, natural multidimensionality is now preferred in colors: soft contrasts, so to speak lived-in-blondes and brunettes and shades that live in the light, Muhonen says.
We previously asked how often Iltalehti readers dye their hair. The majority – about 60 percent – dye their hair about every 2-3 months. A total of 3214 of our readers answered the survey.

In addition, individual personalization is a growing trend. In the future, customers may expect the color to be tailored not only to the condition and porosity of the hair, but also to their own standard of living, habits and even climate conditions.
