The newspaper asked questions in response to a recently published annual report from the Council for the Judiciary, in which a case of fraud was discussed. A spokesperson for the court subsequently confirmed that this took place in Haarlem.
First in cash, then to your own account
In July 2025, the embezzlement of the money came to light during an internal audit. After investigation, it turned out that the employee had stolen cash amounts since 2018. No one in court noticed that. Later he also transferred amounts to his own account.
After an interrogation, the employee was fired. The court also reported the matter to the National Criminal Investigation Department. He then started a criminal investigation, but because the person concerned died shortly after his dismissal, it was stopped.
The court tells the newspaper that they have reached an agreement with the employee’s relatives about compensation for the damage suffered.
Measures
After this fraud case, the Haarlem court took measures to prevent a recurrence. This mainly concerns better supervision of payments.
