Due to its fifth defeat in a row, handball Bundesliga team HSG Wetzlar is still stuck deep in the table cellar.
The Hessians suffered their fourth home defeat of the season against the former record champions VfL Gummersbach with 29:31 (14:14) and thus missed the chance to gain a cushion on the relegation zone. On the other hand, the guests returned to the road to success after three competitive games without a win and initially settled in the top third of the table.
Both teams put up a spirited fight until the final phase. Until the guests took a 31:28 lead, neither the home team nor the Oberbergische team had ever been more than two goals ahead.
Julian Köster and Kristjan Horzen were the most successful VfL throwers with five goals each. Philipp Ahouansou stood out in Wetzlar’s team with ten goals.
