Guillermo Pfening It is part of an essential group of resolutive and efficient actors that populate the Argentine series and films, ideal to carry out the story.
He starred in one of the best national series so far this year, “Spartans”, a story of reconciliation, overcoming and triumph that moved its most faithful spectators.
Cleamers such as Héctor Babenco, Ezequiel Acuña, Pablo Trapero, Lucía Puenzo, Tamae Garateguy and Isabel Coixet trusted their interpretive quality and had it among their ranks. The Spanish actor Mario Casas remembers him with love and says “My friend of Marcos Juárez.”
Effectiveness with good manners, a neighborhood kid mixture with the sophistication of a European vampire. That way of presenting, related to dualities, came as a ring to the finger to integrate the major sextet of “Coherence”Theatrical work based on the movie “Coherence”, a science fiction fable in which the arrival of a comment disrupts the life of a group of friends who had joined to enjoy a dinner and turns the evening into a perverse game of duplication.
Happy for sharing cast with colleagues such as Vanesa González, Laura Cymer, Mey Scapola, Nicolás Pauls and Gonzalo Heredia, the director of the endearing “Cajeto” receives news at a restaurant on Corrientes Street, well willing to the talk in a winter afternoon that smells like chocolate with churros.
News: What seduced him of “coherence”? Had he seen the movie?
Guillermo Pfening: Yes, I saw her! Look, I seduced me a lot to do theater again, I did not get on stage since 2019 because I was working in Spain, doing series mainly, then I came back … And here I also had to work in series! Sometimes it is difficult to combine the theater with the audiovisual, so now that there is a big decrease in that area I thought it was a good time to return to the theater, a territory that I know since a little girl, the place where I trained. I really wanted to and appeared “coherence”, I liked both the proposal and the cast, so here we are embarked on this challenge.
News: But recently he was doing “little big moments” in Callejón Espacio, right?
PFENING: Yes, in the summer, replacing a partner, Michel Noher. It was a bull that I did in Mar del Plata and here, but “coherence” is my real return to the theater because with this work I started from scratch.
News: Was Gonzalo Heredia already distributing copies of his new novel among his companions?
PFENING: Do you know what not? He didn’t give us any (laughs)
News: In the movie there are eight characters and in play six. Is the plot the same?
PFENING: That’s right, in this adaptation of Gonzalo there are six characters, but the story is the same. We are a group of friends who joined one night to dinner, just at that time a comet is passing near the earth, which has all the technological devices convulsed and them too. They are expectant for the phenomenon and at the same time each one is traveling for a key moment of their life, such as trips or decision -making with respect to the couple. Suddenly the light is cut, we are going to look for a phone to a nearby house that has electricity and what we see through the window is disturbing … because it is exactly the same scene we were living! The same table, the same house, the same glasses, the same characters there and here. A unfolding begins, a duplication of reality and new questions arise. That’s the work, who are you and who am I, whether the one who really is me or is another version. Thus begins a world of worries and joys.
News: The film does not have the popularity of “Titanic”, which can be an advantage. Is it good that the public arrives without a preconceived idea?
PFENING: Yes, it is good, in that sense it is not “Rocky” that one already knows by heart what he will see. This work proposes to investigate how many versions there are of yourself or who would have made other decisions. The spectator is going to go with that question, thinking: “Look if I had done this in that year instead of the other, what would my life be like?” It invites you to that, it’s a game, it’s science fiction. Do not come to see a real drama, come to play.
News: And within this game, if Guille Pfening had not decided to be an actor, what would have been Plan B?
PFENING: Guille Pfening first decided to be a tennis player and since he was not good to be a tennis player, Plan B was to be an actor. So I’m living my plan B! (series)
News: Precisely speaking of tennis, there are many Guilleros Célebres in Argentina: Francella, Vilas, the Mellizo Barros Schelotto, Guillermo Moreno, Guillote Coppola, Guillermo Fernández and Guillermo Francos. Which one does it like?
PFENING: Guillermo Vilas undoubtedly! And that I didn’t see him play.
News: In Spain you made “Foodie Love” and “The Practitioner” with Mario Casas. I understand that there are certain universal codes, but do work there any substantial difference with which it is done in our audiovisual?
PFENING: Not really, you only work differently in the staging, there are more flat and more cameras because there is more money destined for production. But actorrally even seems to me that it is much better here, everything we do not have to supply it with something human and homemade that makes it very noble.
News: Recently Joaquín Furriel, his partner “The Patron,” said in a note that he was very grateful for Darín for opening the doors to the Argentine actors in Spain, although before there were figures such as Héctor Alterio or Federico Luppi. Did you feel well received there?
PFENING: The truth is, super well received by all, I had excellent fellow, both in front and behind the camera. I took the best memories of Spain, I had a lot and we worked a lot, hard and cute. So I would like to work again because I adore them.
News: And Mario Casas, being a star, is good vibes?
PFENING: Yes, Super! It is divine.
News: This year you were also quite busy at the Bafici with the premiere of “We have to talk”, directed by the good galper, Mariano …
PFENING: Yessss! (Series). “We have to talk” is a film filmed throughout one night, in the house of a friend of his and talks a bit of something that takes up “coherence”, if he who is in front of is the person I believe or another. He also gets into the divergence between thought and action, for example, you currently think something, I have my own thoughts and perhaps we are talking about anything other than that is not the one that goes through our mind. Of what goes inside is what the movie speaks, Mariano Galperín always does these funny follies and he goes well.
News: He also starred in “Spartanos”, the Argentine series that I liked the most so far this year. What left that experience?
PFENING: “Spartans” was a spectacular experience. Interpret Coco Oderigo, creator of the first Argentine rugby team made up of people deprived of liberty, the way we did it, under Sebastián Pivotto, with the colleagues I had and achieve a very good final product does not always happen. Hopefully it is recognized by journalists or in the awards because I think it is a great series, I take a lot of love. The most beautiful thing was the number of people who wrote to me by the networks saying incredible things, they were very touched.
News: I think that the first time in which many took note of their presence was in “Born and raised”, Pablo Trapero’s film. Did a before and after for you mean?
PFENING: Yes, totally. From “born and raised” I made a lot of more movies just for having been in that movie, almost twenty years passed, nineteen since we did it to be exact. Imagine what it meant for me with 24 years, although I had already acted in some little things, working with Pablo Trapero in a protagonist was the first really strong thing I did. Accompanying that movie I traveled a lot around the world, both “born and raised” and “Nobody looks at us” by Julia Solomonoff or “Foodie Love”, were milestones in my career.
News: On June 20, circling the remote control, I saw him in “Belgrano” with Pablo Rago. What is it like to make a historic movie about heroes that we saw in the books of the school?
PFENING: It was very nice to do it, look just Sebastián Pivotto, the same director of “Spartans.” It is always good to participate in these projects, I also made “Fontana”, a film by Juan Bautista Stagnaro where I played a Darwin disciple, in “Belgrano” I incarnated to the Newfoundland. I like to make period characters, now that is missed. Bah, it is strange to make cinema, right?
News: Recently, Tamae Garateguy was interviewed in News, you starred in your movie “10 pigeons.” How do you remember it?
PFENING: With her we did “10 pigeons” and also “Wolf woman”, Tamae is a samurai of cinema. I remember her with great affection, it is an example of director, a laborer mine that goes forward and on the road imposes new genres on the Argentine cinema agenda. Tamae? I get my hat!
