Guardrail comes too late for relatives of Sanne: ‘This is unbearable’

A double feeling for the family and friends of Sanne who died in an accident this week. They are happy with the crash barrier that has been placed in the deadly curve along the A59, the place where Sanne and Hebe died. But above all they are angry. “The fact that we lost her, but we didn’t have to, is unbearable.”

Mark Deckers from Nuenen, a good friend of Sanne, tells Omroep Brabant. Mark sat with Sanne’s parents on RTL talk show Beau two weeks ago. There, mother Fiona made an appeal to the House of Representatives.

“She asked the House in the program to please place that guardrail. The fact that it has now happened is really Fiona’s credit,” says Mark. “Fiona pulled this off and no one else. Without her, that guardrail would never have come.”

“She didn’t want to think that anyone else would die like this.”

This means a lot to Sanne’s family, says Mark. “They are incredibly grateful for putting that guardrail in place. Sanne’s mother has always said that she wanted to feel that she had done everything she could. She couldn’t imagine anyone else dying in that corner like that.”

The city council and the college of mayor and aldermen of Den Bosch were already urging measures, because things had gone wrong before the controversial accident at the same place. On Sunday, another car flew out of the bend, which then ended up in the water.

“I saw Sanne’s body after the accident. She didn’t have a scratch.”

Of course, the crash barrier comes too late for the relatives of Sanne and Hebe. “They died unnecessarily, that guardrail should have been there a long time ago,” says Mark. “I saw Sanne’s body after the accident. She didn’t have a scratch. If there had been a crash barrier there, Sanne and Hebbe would still be alive. A far too expensive price was paid for the crash barrier.”

Sanne’s parents are still grieved, says Mark, who is still devastated. “No, it’s not going well. I spoke to Sanne every day. She was a trinity with her parents. But I was also a two-unit with her. The fact that we lost her, but that we didn’t have to, is unbearable.”

Moreover, it is still unclear what exactly happened. “That plays in our heads all the time.” That’s why Mark asks people to stop speculating about the cause of death on social media.

“Sanne was incredibly responsible.”

“Everything is posted. About her speeding, for example. According to the police reports, that is not true at all. So stop causing unnecessary suffering. Sanne was incredibly responsible and would never do anything to endanger Hebe. I put my hands in the fire for that.”

The video explains why a crash barrier was or was not necessary.
