Groen sets conditions for increasing defense budget: “Also enough money for matters that are not purely military”

The ruling party Green links a series of green and social conditions to the discussion about increasing the defense budget to 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2035. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) would like to make that promise at the end of this month at the NATO summit in Madrid, but within the government Ecolo and Groen are asking themselves questions. According to Groen Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter, there must be enough money left over for protection against climate change, the energy transition and for social policy, she said in ‘De Morgen’ on Radio 1.
