Julian Green is leaving SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the summer after nine years. The 30-year-old midfielder’s expiring contract will not be extended, the second division team, which was saved from relegation, announced on Friday. The American Green initially moved to Fürth from VfB Stuttgart on loan in 2017, and a year later it became a permanent commitment. The veteran and longest-serving professional in the team was on the pitch 247 times for SpVgg and managed 63 goals.
The previous sports director Stephan Fürstner explained: “Ju did an incredible amount for our club over many years and shaped it – both athletically and personally. He was an important player on and off the pitch, always identified with the club and took on responsibility. We would like to express our thanks for his commitment and the many special moments in the cloverleaf jersey.”
Green, who was once trained at FC Bayern, said: “When I came to Fürth in 2017, I never thought that I would be wearing this jersey for so long. It was an intensive and formative time in which I was able to develop both athletically and personally. I experienced many special moments and met some people who accompanied and supported me on this path – I am very grateful for that. But after so many years, now feels like the right time for a change. Cloverleaf fans, you will always be one have room in my heart.”
