Greta Thunberg pleads not guilty before London judge after climate protest | Abroad

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg pleaded not guilty today in a London court. She is accused of disrupting public order during a demonstration against fossil energy companies in the center of the British capital.

The 20-year-old Swedish woman was surrounded by journalists upon her arrival. She only spoke to confirm her identity and express her innocence. In addition to Thunberg, four other climate activists were put on trial. They were all released pending a two-day trial starting on February 1.

Thunberg, a fierce opponent of the fossil fuel industry, was arrested on October 17 along with 25 other climate activists outside a luxury hotel in central London. The so-called Energy Intelligence Forum was taking place there at that time, a three-day conference that climate activists also call the ‘Oscars of oil’.

The Swedish climate activist is being formally prosecuted for failing to comply with a police order not to block the street where the protest took place. During the demonstration, organized by the climate movement Fossil Free London, the activists tried to block access to the hotel.
