Non the panorama of new television and anime productions in 2025, one of the most anticipated new features is the reboot of Grendizerfrom the title Grendizer U. The series, which will be broadcast on Rai 2 from tonight Monday 6 January at 9.20pm, represents a modern relaunch of the classic that wrote the history of anime in Italy and in much of the world. Grendizer (or Grendizer, as it is known in the rest of the world) was one of the first anime to arrive in Italy in the seventies. And it made entire generations of enthusiasts fall in love with it. Created by the legendary Go Nagai, this “mecha” told the adventures of Duke Fleed. An alien prince who, together with his robot Grendizer, fought against the forces of evil coming from space.

From South Park to Sailor Moon: 15 unforgettable cartoons from the 90s

The announcement of Grendizer U has aroused great enthusiasm among historical fans and new generations of enthusiasts. The title itself suggests a more dynamic revisiting of the saga, but without losing the connection with the tradition that made the character famous.

The first four episodes will be broadcast tonight, entitled The guardian of the Blue Planet, The attack on Vega, The Prince’s Fury And The calm after the storm. Depending on viewer feedback, Rai will decide whether to also broadcast the other episodes of the series free-to-air.

Grendizer Uthe plot

Grendizer U takes place in a contemporary universewhere new technologies and the discovery of space play a central role. The plot follows a new generation of protagonists, who come into contact with the legendary robot Grendizer and must face the same dark forces that threaten the universe.

The cartoon promises to combine the frenzy and adrenaline of giant robots with modern issues related to sustainability, the environment, technological challenges and the struggle between Good and Evil. Maintaining, always and in any case, the charm and aesthetics of the original version.

The character of Duke Fleed, who has become an icon of justice and courage for lovers, will still be at the center of the events. However, we will also see the entry of new heroes, whose ties to the history of the past will be fundamental for the future. The “U” in the title could also suggest a concept of “university” or “union”. And it can be interpreted as a key to understanding. Because the union between the young protagonists represents a sort of humanity with a very specific purpose. That of protecting survival from new and unexpected threats.

A reboot between nostalgia and innovation

The technical evolution is announced as one of the characteristic elements of the series. While maintaining the charm of classic animation, Grendizer U uses modern technologies to deliver spectacular fight scenes and smooth, detailed animation. Capable of satisfying both the most nostalgic fans and “virgin” spectators.

The soundtrack, a fundamental and iconic element of the original series, will be another focal point of the reboot. New songs will be inspired by the music that has become legendary but adding a touch of modernity.

Grendizer U it not only represents an opportunity for Italian fans to see a new version of their hero, but it is also a project designed for an international audience. Bringing with it the charm of Japanese animation and the nostalgia of a work that has marked the pop culture of entire generations.

This reboot promises to be a perfect mix of nostalgia and innovation. And it seems to be able to win over longtime fans and new viewers alike. The staff is supervised by Director Mitsuo Fukuda, the Screenplay is by Ichiro Okouchi and the script by Tatsuhito Higuchi.

The original cartoon, a cult of the seventies

Grendizer it was a cult phenomenon. In Italy and around the world. One of the first anime to introduce giant robots to television. A challenge that fascinated the public in the Seventies for its novelty and its visual impact, with its original and revolutionary combination of robots and space battles.

And then the universal themes: the fight for justice, the defense of the planet, courage and solidarity are global themes that have attracted not only children, but also adults. Leading Grendizer to become an authentic cultural phenomenon. Will the same happen in 2025?
