Greenwashing festival or political tool?

This year’s climate summit is a place full of contrasts and contradictions. The event takes place in Sharm el-Sheikh, the city of a thousand pools in the desert. In this far from sustainable city, a key political and diplomatic debate is taking place to outline a battery of measures to deal with the advance of the climate crisis. In ‘My planet needs me’the EL PERIÓDICO podcast on the climate crisis and sustainability, we dedicate a special episode at the climate summit and we connected with Valentina Raffio, posted to Sharm el-Sheikh, to discuss her impressions of the event. Are these types of meetings a greenwashing festival or a crucial political tool for the future of the planet?

In this episode we explain how is the climate summit from inside. We talked, for example, about what space is like, how each country sets up pavilions to show off their climate policies (although, in some cases, they have little to brag about) and what a typical day is like at an event of this type. We also summarize some of the big issues that are being discussed right now in Sharm el-Sheikh. From emission reduction plans to the debate over who should pay for the losses and damages caused by the climate crisis in the poorest regions of the planet. To understand the importance of all this, we explain the history of two african activists who have traveled to the summit to Defend your future and that of your children.

At this year’s climate summit, brainy bargaining sessions are interspersed with somewhat grotesque moments. On Tuesday, for example, a polar bear, a giant bananaa crossfit activist group Y A scientist given to rap they sang an environmental version of Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Holding out for a hero’ to raise awareness about the climate crisis. Meanwhile, a vegan activist dressed in a sleek black suit and a chicken on the head he was yelling at climate summit attendees to stop eating meat. These are just some of the scenes that illustrate how such an event intersperses momentous debates with somewhat surreal situations.
