Greens are pushing for an increase in parking fees in Berlin

Now the coffers should be filled quickly: The Berlin Greens are pushing for a rapid increase in parking fees.

The spokesman for modern mobility of the Green Group, Werner Graf, demanded on Wednesday that the increase in fees for resident parking from 10 to 120 euros per year agreed in the red-green-red coalition agreement as well as new tariffs for short-term parking would have to be implemented this year .

At the same time, he made it clear that from his point of view this could only be a first step. “For us as the Greens, things have to continue,” said Graf. The aim is to develop a differentiated fee system that also includes social and ecological factors. It is conceivable, for example, to take the size of a vehicle into account. It is important to him that the whole thing can be implemented unbureaucratically, says Graf.

The Greens parliamentary group leader Antje Kapek pointed out that the turnaround in transport with the expansion of local public transport would cost billions. In addition to the ticket income and state subsidies, an additional third financing pillar is necessary. The instruments that need to be developed for this include a mandatory guest ticket for tourists, which was also agreed in the coalition agreement – as well as higher parking fees.

Graf pointed out that increasing parking fees is also a question of justice. At the moment, parking for residents on public roads costs around seven cents per square meter per month. “It can not go on like that.”
