Great victory for hockey players in Huizen, play-off places in sight again

The Groningen hockey players recorded a great victory against top team Huizen on Sunday afternoon. Coach Julian Steen’s team won 3-2 in ‘t Gooi after a flying start.

Within seven minutes, Groningen took the lead in Huizen on Sunday afternoon. Evaline Janssens’ first goal came after a failed penalty corner. “We have trained on a variant that we use if the corner fails. It was executed well, so I am very happy with that,” said Steen.

A minute after the opening goal, Ellen Hadderingh made it 0-2 on a pass from Liz Klompmaker. Steen then saw his team pushed back, but thought they defended well. Yet Huizen scored the tying goal in the second quarter.

Resilient

In the fourth quarter, Groningen made it 1-3 thanks to a goal by Canisha ‘Kees’ van Duyn. She was accurate on the rebound from a penalty corner. Five minutes before the end, Huizen came back to 2-3, after which the home team was awarded a few penalty corners. “We defended them well,” said Steen. “We showed ourselves to be resilient in this match and that is good for me.”

With the victory, Groningen takes some distance from the bottom regions and is even in sight of second place again. The Groningen team is only six points behind runner-up Victoria.
