Great honor for handball star Andreas Wolff

Handball national goalkeeper Andreas Wolff was voted “Sportsman of the Month” for January by around 4,000 athletes supported by Sporthilfe. The German Handball Association (DHB) announced this on Monday.

The 32-year-old is the first team athlete to receive this honor since basketball star Dirk Nowitzki in 2011. Wolff reached the semi-finals with the DHB selection at the home European Championships and was elected to the all-star team as the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

Germany’s top athletes voted for Wolff in first place with 58.5 percent in the Sporthilfe election. Ski jumper Andreas Wellinger came in behind with 22.2 percent, and toboggan world champion Max Langenhan was voted third with 19.3 percent.

“I would like to thank you very much for your choice. After my serious injury last year, January 2024 was something very special for me,” said Wolff: “Being able to stand on the plate again at our home tournament and help the team was one Great experience. To be named in the same row as Dirk Nowitzki is of course phenomenal for me.”
