GRAND TOUR
Type: sentimental-picaresque comedy ✦✦✦
Direction: Miguel Gomes. With Gonçalo Waddington, Crista Alfaiate, João Pedro Vaz, Teresa Madruga
After Lusitanian Africa by Taboo (2012), the Portuguese Miguel Gomes leads us – in pursuit of a runaway betrothed – in south-east Asia, between Singapore, Thailand and Burma.
When Edward, about to get married to Molly, receives a letter announcing his arrival, he goes into hiding and undertakes the tour that was the specialty of the British colonialists in the 1920s (the film is inspired by The gentleman in the living room by Somerset Maugham), the tenacious girlfriend at his heels.
Crista Alfaiate is Molly, the betrothed in the film “Grand Tour”.
Filmed during the pandemic, the film won the director’s award at Cannescombines contemporary images taken by Gomes during his personal tour in Asia and vintage studio footage.
The result is a fascinating hybrid, an opportunity for temporal and geographical disorientation which is good for the eyes and also for the heart.
