Grammys 2024: Tracy Chapman will perform “Fast Car” with Luke Combs

On February 4th, the two artists will bring Chapman’s track together on stage for the first time.

Tracy Chapman hasn’t appeared in public for a few years, but that will change on February 5th. The 59-year-old will be performing with Luke Combs at the 2024 Grammys in Los Angeles. Together they will perform their track “Fast Car” live.

Tracy Chapman makes history

Luke Combs’ Chapman cover of “Fast Car” reached the top of the Billboard Country Airplay charts in summer 2023. This success was also a milestone in her career for Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to be the sole songwriter on a number one country hit. The singer and guitarist told Billboard that she never expected to find herself in the country charts. She also said: “I’m excited for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced Fast Car.”

Tracy Chapman Hit single was first released in 1988 and experienced its first house revival in 2015 by Jonas Blue and Dakota. 35 years after her debut, Combs’ rendition of “Fast Car” also reached second place on the “Hot 100 Billboard Charts” and won the CMA (acronym for “Country Music Association”) Awards for Song and Single of the Year.

Chapman’s win at the CMA was also an important step in music history. The country award has been presented since 1967 and in 56 years, no Black songwriter had ever won the song of the year award before Chapman took home the trophy in 2023.
