Graham Nash spoke about David Crosby’s death in an interview. The two musicians and founding members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were still in contact shortly before Crosby’s death on January 18.

Accordingly, they wanted to meet to make a phone call and had approached each other again. The silence between the two musicians was long: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young performed together for the last time in 2015 and broke up a year later in a dispute.

“Yes, it was painful,” Nash said in an interview. “The fact that we got a little closer again at the end. He sent me a voicemail saying he wanted to apologize and if we could find time to talk on the phone. I emailed him and I was like, “Okay, call me at 11 a.m., then it’s 2 p.m. on the east coast.” He didn’t call and then he was gone.”

When asked how long it had been since the conversation, he replied: “Maybe a week and a half. I wonder if he knew he was going to die. You know, I’ve been thinking about that. He was a very intelligent man. I wouldn’t put it past him to realize that. The truth is, we’ve thought for 20 years that he could die at any time. Ever since his liver transplant and all his stents. He had seven. His body was failing. But like I said, all I can do is try to remember the good moments because we had a lot of them.”

The two worked together for almost 50 years. They started as a threesome with Stephen Stills in 1968, before joining Neil Young the following year. At times as a trio, Young was partly a member of the “supergroup” until 2015. Crosby passed away at the age of 81. He was the oldest member.
