Gold for swimmer Steenbergen and track cyclists

Two gold medals and a silver medal for the Netherlands at the European Championships. Swimmer Marrit Steenbergen and the male track cycling team took first place on Friday. The female riders finished second.

Steenbergen won the European Championship gold in Rome. She was fastest in the 100m freestyle with a time of 54.25 seconds, beating France’s Charlotte Bonnet and Freya Anderson (Great Britain). The 22-year-old Steenbergen has conquered her second European Championship title: on Thursday she also swam to gold in the four times 200-meter freestyle.

The Netherlands was also successful in track cycling, which was held in Munich. The team sprinters Harrie Lavreysen, Roy van den Berg and Jeffrey Hoogland extended their European win there by beating their French competitors in the final. The Dutch trio was a small second faster than France with 34,639 seconds.

The women hoped to deliver the same feat, but lost the gold to Germany. Kyra Lamberink, Hetty van der Wouw and Shanne Braspennincx were about two seconds slower than the Germans. The Dutch women thus lost their European title.
