Goalkeeper Flek loses cup final with Freiburg after penalties

Goalkeeper Mark Fleks has grabbed next to the first prize from his football career. The Orange international lost the German cup final to RB Leipzig with SC Freiburg. After regular time and extra time it was 1-1, after which RB Leipzig took the penalty kicks better in Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

For a long time things looked good for Freiburg. Maximilian Eggestein gave Fleks’ team the lead. Leipzig had to continue with one man less from the 57th minute after a red card for Marcel Halstenberg. With ten men, Leipzig, thanks to the Frenchman Christopher Nkunku, came alongside fifteen minutes before the end.

Shortly before the end of the second half of extra time, Leipzig was left with only nine men after a second yellow card for Kevin Kampl. In the little time left, Freiburg failed to take advantage.

Christian Günter and Ermedin Demirovic missed from 11 meters on behalf of Freiburg. Fleks failed to stop any of Leipzig’s four penalty kicks.

It is the first time that Leipzig has won the German Cup. The club lost the final in 2019 and 2021.
