Goal difference 2-0 after 8 games: Burgos keeper Caro reaches for Bravo’s record

Goal difference 2:0 after 8 games

Spanish second division side Burgos CF currently have the oddest goal difference in Europe. After eight games in LaLiga2, the Castile-Leon club have scored two goals themselves, not conceding a single one and picked up 12 points in the process. Although this is “only” eighth place, which is not enough for the promotion playoffs, goalkeeper José Antonio Caro can break a record in Spanish football in a duel with relegated and leaders Deportivo Alavés on Saturday (9 p.m.).

The 28-year-old was in the box in each of the eight games and kept it clean. The previous record for a goalless start to the season was set by Claudio Bravo (39; now Real Betis) in 2014/15 with FC Barcelona. Caro has already broken the second division record from the 1972/73 season, set by Juanjo Santamaría for Racing Santander: seven games and 26 minutes.

To catch up with Bravo, the ‘Churripi’ goalkeeper must go 36 minutes against Alavés without conceding a goal. The Chilean ex-Barça keeper lost his clean sheet in 2014 in the “Clásico” against Real Madrid (1: 3) when Cristiano Ronaldo gave him a penalty in the 35th minute of the game on October 25. Meanwhile, the longest clean sheet in Spain at any time of the season is held by Abel Resino with 14 clean sheets for Atlético Madrid in 1990/91.

This season, Burgos’ and Caros’ stats are also unmatched in any first or second division in Europe, according to a query in the Transfermark database – and by a wide margin. FC Barcelona and FC Ararat-Armenia from Bardzragujn khumb follow in the second division with five clean sheets in a row. No team from Germany comes even close to such a series, in Austria SK Sturm Graz have not conceded a goal for four games.

Also four clean sheets: La Fiorita 1967 (San Marino), KF Egnatia (Albania), AFK Csikszereda Miercurea Ciuc (Romania), HNK Cibalia Vinkovci (Croatia), Pécsi MFC (Hungary), FC Differdange 03 (Luxembourg), LNZ Cherkasy (Ukraine)

At the start of the season, Daniel Batz from 1. FC Saarbrücken set a record in the 3rd division when he went five games without conceding a goal. In German professional football, only Timo Hildebrand kept his goal clean longer than the 31-year-old from the first matchday in 2003/04 with VfB Stuttgart. In an interview with Transfermarkt, Batz called this a “nice snapshot” at the end of August.
