Go Ahead Eagles has caused a big surprise in the Europa League, the most prominent tournament in Europe after the Champions League. The Deventers were too strong for Aston Villa in front of their own audience with 2-1. Three weeks earlier, that club from Birmingham won 0-2 against Feyenoord in De Kuip.
Aston Villa took the lead early in the match through attacker Evann Guessand, but Mathis Suray and captain Mats Deijl managed to turn the game around on behalf of the Eagles.
The Deventers previously won at the Greek Panathinaikos, which means that the club already has six points after three rounds. An away match against RB Salzburg awaits in two weeks.
The Eagles are currently in twelve place in the Eredivisie. The club managed to qualify for the Europa League last year by winning the KNVB Cup, the first prize in the club’s modern history.
