The Go Ahead Eagles Deventer crowned the Dutch cup winner for the first time.
In a dramatic final, the outsider triumphed 4-2 in a penalty shootout against the favorite AZ Alkmaar. After the extension, it had stood 1: 1 (1: 1, 0: 0). The Eagles had caused thick surprises several times this season and, among other things, beat PSV Eindhoven twice in a row: in the cup and in the eredivisia.
Alkmaar dominates and takes the lead
Before 51,177 fans, Alkmaar dominated the game, but needed two penalty for the lead. After a foul, AZ striker Troy Parrott initially missed Deventer’s goalkeeper Jari de Buser. However, since he had left the line too early, Parrot was allowed to run again – and scored (54.).
The Go Ahead Eagles around the German central defender Gerrit Nauber came to the end twice, Sören Tengstedt (82nd) and Oscar Pettersson (90.+6) initially missed the late Lucky Punch.
Compensation in the 99th minute
Then Alkmaars Teun Koopmeiners played the ball in the penalty area by hand, Mats Deijl remained nervous and forced the extension (90.+9). Ultimately, however, the decision was made only in the penalty shootout, in which De Buser became a hero with two balls held.
