Football globetrotter Lutz Pfannenstiel is taking on his next task: the 52-year-old will be the new sports director at Scottish first division club FC Aberdeen. The club announced this on Monday.
Pfannenstiel, who was released at the end of August after five years as sports director of MLS team St. Louis City SC, will officially take up his new position on November 10th, subject to the completion of visa formalities.
“FC Aberdeen has what many clubs around the world can only dream of – a rich tradition, a colorful history and a real football soul,” said Pfannenstiel: “I look forward to bringing my many years of experience in football to a Scottish city and region that lives for the sport and I look forward to being an active part of this great community.”
During his playing days, Pfannenstiel was the first player ever to be under contract on all six continents. Before his position in St. Louis, he also worked in Germany as head of international relations at TSG Hoffenheim and as sports director at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
“Lutz will oversee and be responsible for all areas of Aberdeen FC related to football and performance to achieve our ambitious goals in today’s highly competitive Scottish Football League,” said Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack: “With his extensive experience in coaching, scouting, youth development and leadership, gained across a range of roles and cultures, we believe Lutz will play an important role “We will play a part in achieving the club’s footballing goals in the coming years.”
