THEN 60 years in the Italian Alps has been lost a glacial area of over 170 square km, equal to the surface of Lake Como. It is the fact that emerges from the final balance of caravan of Legambiente glaciers with the Italian Glaciological Foundation which this summer observed the health of some increasingly threatened Alpine glaciers.
Eight glaciers, special observed: five in Italy – the Adamello glacier, in Lombardy, the Ventina glacier, in Lombardy, the Solda glacier in South Tyrol, those of Bessanese and Ciamarella, in Piedmont, on the Alps Graie – and three abroad – the Aletsch, the King of the Alps, and the glaciers of the Zugspitze, in Germany with the Schneeferner and Höllentalferner.
