Giro: New Corona cases – Great St. Bernard deleted

Status: 05/16/2023 12:01 p.m

Corona is still the dominant topic at the 106th Giro d’Italia. Before the start of the tenth stage, more cases became known.

Italian climbing specialist Domenico Pozzovivo left the bike race, as did Norwegian Sven Erik Bystrom and Australian Callum Scotson. The number of corona-related failures rose to nine drivers, including the world champion and former leader Remco Evenepoel. On Monday, the Giro organizers reintroduced the obligation to wear a mask.

In addition, fresh snow and the danger of avalanches are forcing the organizers to change the route. The 13th stage on Friday to Crans-Montana in Switzerland is to be shortened from 199 to 207 kilometers, reports the Swiss newspaper “La Nouvelliste”.

With the 2469 meter high pass Grosser Sankt Bernard, the highest point of this year’s Tour of Italy had to be removed from the program, as more fresh snow was expected before the stage. The peloton is now to be guided through the much lower, almost six-kilometer-long tunnel.
