For years he was a fixture at the Tour de France and the other major tours. But now Simon Yates is calling it quits.
The British professional cyclist and Giro winner Simon Yates has ended his career. The 33-year-old, known for his successes in the mountain stages and on the track, announced his retirement in a statement on Wednesday.
“I thought about it for a long time and have now come to the conclusion that it is the right time to retire from the sport,” said Yates, who most recently worked for the top team Visma-Lease a Bike.
The professional cyclist won the Vuelta in 2018, the Giro d’Italia in 2025 and numerous stages in the Tour de France. His strengths lay primarily in the mountains. He previously celebrated success on the track and became world champion in the points race in 2013.
“Cycling has always been a part of my life,” Yates continued. “I am very proud of what I have achieved. I am also grateful for the lessons I have learned along the way.”
His twin brother Adam Yates remains active in cycling and rides for UAE Emirates-XRG.
