Giro d’Italia: Groves wins sprint – dog causes Evenepoel to fall

Status: 05/10/2023 5:58 p.m

Professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel fell on the fifth stage of the 106th Giro d’Italia because of a dog on the road. The Belgian fell again in the last three kilometers. Kaden Groves won the day.

The Belgian fell to the ground on a wet road at the beginning of the 171-kilometer route between Atripalda and Salerno on Wednesday, was uninjured and was able to continue the race after a short stop at the side of the road. The young star and world champion then showed the television cameras with a thumbs up that things were going on for him.

The favorite for overall victory had successfully defended the overall lead until Tuesday after his success in the opening time trial. After the fourth stage, however, the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund replaced him and took over the pink jersey.
