“Often when I cycled past a football cage, I only saw boys,” says Ester Fabriek, district manager of the West district. “At the same time, we also know that girls exercise less than boys.”
Together with Flora Breemer from the South district and Carolien de Heer from the East district, she therefore came up with the idea of hanging signs at various football fields with the message that girls get priority.
For example, from now on, Smaragtplein will be open to girls every Monday, and they will have priority on Wednesdays at the Johan Cruyff Court Oranje Veld in the Kolenkitbuurt. In any case, the reactions at the latter location are positive. “My daughter plays football here now and it is a great initiative,” says a mother on the sidelines.
