Leipzig clinched their next victory in the women’s Bundesliga – but it was bought at a high price. National player Giovanna Hoffmann appears to have suffered a more serious injury.
The women of RB Leipzig defeated SGS Essen 2:1 (2:0) on Friday evening. While the negative trend at the bottom continues despite a change of coach, the joy of the Saxons’ victory is overshadowed by an injury. Giovanna Hoffmann had to leave the field early and in pain.
What had happened? The German international striker was left lying down in the second half after a seemingly harmless duel and was holding her left knee. After a short break in treatment, Hoffmann had to leave supported and in tears. Particularly bitter: If the 27-year-old were to be out longer, she would also miss the Final Four in the Nations League. Germany will first face France in October.
Previously, Hoffmann gave Leipzig the lead in the 4th minute in front of 794 spectators. Shortly before the break, teammate Julia Landenberger increased (39th). With the win at the start of the 6th matchday, RB temporarily climbed to seventh place in the table. For Essen, Paulina Platner was able to reduce the score to 1:2 in the 51st minute with a remarkable long-range shot. However, there was nothing more possible for the bottom team.
SGS Essen is still waiting for its first win of the season. After six matchdays, the team is in last place in the table with one point and a goal difference of 2:19. Interim coach Jessica Wissmann took over the team during the week after the club parted ways with head coach Robert Augustin and sports director Thomas Gerstner.
