Gina Schumacher speaks in detail for the first time about the consequences of her father’s skiing accident. A new ZDF documentary shows how she found her footing in equestrian sport – and rose to the top of the world herself.
Gina Schumacher reveals private insights into her life as an equestrian. She and her mother Corinna are part of a ZDF documentary that deals with their great sporting passion: reining, a discipline in western riding. Mother and daughter are among the best in Europe or even in the world. In the film, the 29-year-old also tells how she found stability in equestrian sports after her father Michael Schumacher’s serious skiing accident in 2013.
The documentary “Horsepower – The World of Gina Schumacher” follows her and her mother Corinna on ranches in the USA and Switzerland. “Bild” was able to see the film in advance and reported on some of the scenes. Gina Schumacher describes the time after her father’s accident as a turning point. “After Dad’s accident, I really got involved because I had to do something,” she says. The horses were more than just a hobby for her: “They helped me get through everything.”
The daughter of the Formula 1 legend has long since made a name for herself in equestrian sport. According to the “Bild report”, the documentary shows, among other things, her success in the summer of 2025, when she won two world championship titles on the family ranch in Givrins just a few weeks after the birth of her first daughter – individually and with the team. The ranch owned by the Schumachers bears Corinna Schumacher’s initials CS.
Corinna Schumacher also has her say on the TV show and recalls an early assessment of her husband. Michael Schumacher once said that Gina will be “much better than you” because she brings the necessary consistency in sport. Looking back, she thought: “He was so right.”
Equestrian sport has a long tradition in the family. Corinna Schumacher is also a successful horse breeder. Gina reports that her parents influenced her early on – and how crucial this support was for her career.
“I’m grateful that I can do it like this,” she says about her journey. It was always important to her to work hard and take advantage of the opportunities she was given.
Former Formula 1 racing driver Michael Schumacher has been shielded from the public since a serious skiing accident resulting in a head injury in 2013. His family has largely withdrawn from the public eye for years. The documentary will run in the ZDF media library from April 17th and will be broadcast on television on May 17th.
