Gian van Veen was eliminated on Sunday in the semi-finals of the World Masters darts tournament in Milton Keynes. The darts player from Andel lost 5-0 to the Englishman Luke Humphries.

Van Veen had opportunities in the first two sets, but he failed to score. Humphries took advantage of this. Only in the third set did the darts player from Andel succeed lay to conquer – with a nice 152 finish – but that did not turn the match. Humphries threw out 91 and steamed through to a 3-0 and then a 4-0 lead in sets.

In the fifth set Van Veen succeeded in one lay to steal from his opponent, but he was broken back by Humphries and also the last lay then – after misses by the darts player from Andel – went to the Englishman.

In the final, Humphries faced reigning world champion Luke Littler. That match became a true thriller. Littler eventually won 6-5.

Van Veen had started the World Masters tournament on Thursday with a victory over the Englishman Ryan Joyce. He then also defeated Nathan Aspinall and James Wade, but Humphries was a size too big this weekend.

Michael van Gerwen from Vlijmen, Jimmy van Schie from Breda and Niels Zonneveld from Helvoirt were eliminated in the first round of the World Masters tournament. Zonneveld narrowly lost to Gary Anderson (2-3), Van Schie to Ross Smith (1-3) and Van Gerwen had to admit his superiority to Damon Heta (1-3).
