The 2nd Bundesliga of German football experienced a really sad situation when the news of the tragedy in Magdeburg reached the Düsseldorf stadium.
The match between Fortuna Düsseldorf and FC Magdeburg was in progress when a stop message appeared on the stadium’s light board. It said that a car crashed into a crowd at Magdeburg’s Christmas market.
German newspaper Bildin according to the atmosphere in the arena became eerie. 33,000 people stopped cheering and just looked silently at the light board.
FC Magdeburg won the match 5–2. When Dutchman Mo El Hankouri scored his team’s fourth goal, he gestured regretfully towards the club’s fans.
The Magdeburg players did not give interviews after the match. Also Düsseldorf Andre Hoffmann was tight-lipped about the tragedy.
– In moments like this, football takes a back seat. I want to express our condolences to everyone affected by this, Hoffmann said.
According to the German rescue authorities, 60 to 80 people have been injured at Magdeburg’s Christmas market, 15 of them seriously. According to German media reports, there would be as many as 11 dead.
