A mysterious ghost car with police tape around it is suddenly gone. The damaged car without license plates stood right next to a busy road in Breda for three months. The owner took it away. “It’s all very strange,” say local residents.
A large pile of glass shards is all that is left on the verge on the Ettensebaan. “Good! Get rid of it,” responds local resident Judith Verhoeven. “Weird that it was there for so long.”
The Ford Ka had major scratches. The car was only a few centimeters from the road all this time. Right in a spot where cars can steer into a lane to turn right. So it could be scary for drivers in the dark. He would be gone for about a week now.
Expired license plates
The police previously announced that the car had been there since December. “It is probably a vehicle with expired export license plates (white plates with black letters, ed.). The license plates have been seized and the owner is being informed,” a spokesperson for the national unit told Omroep Brabant.
The removal remained a mystery for a while. The police and the municipality pointed to each other when asked who should have him removed. The regional and national police say they have not removed the car.
Owner took it away
A spokesperson for the municipality of Breda also said he had no information from enforcement, but came back and could only say: “The owner of the car was contacted and he removed it. It took some time to reach him.” Why that took so long remains unclear.
Local residents are left surprised and relieved. 77-year-old Annelies de Lange: “That they leave it next to the road for so long. Strange!”
According to a neighbor, it could easily have been done faster, even though the car had no license plates. “Can’t the police find the owner with the chassis number?” This is a unique identification code that all vehicles must have. “But, removal is not allowed just like that,” he knows.
