Do you know that? Are you enjoying walking on, for example, the Lange Landpad in the Leyens or the Kangoeroepad in Seghwaert and suddenly all drops fall on your head. You look up and see the trees with a clear blue sky above it. So it’s not rain, but what is it?

During a detour at the Noord Aa we were treated on the long lamp path to a few fat drops on our heads, while we walked under a few large trees. A rain shower fell down at the height of the Road Runners running association while it was a bright sunny day. What’s going on here?

Foam

Boomexpert and former Zoetermeerder Wim Oirsouw explains: “Through the entire city, and therefore also on the Lange Landpad, there are different willows, such as the shooting willow. In these trees the willow foam cicad lives. The larvae make a white, foamy substance to protect themselves and as a camouflage.

Crying tree

Sometimes these critters make so much foam that it slides into drops of the leaves. That is why we sometimes talk about watery willows because those drops fall down like a crying shower. And we get those foam drops on our heads! In July, the larvae became mature so that they can fly away and jump away. Then the foam drops have disappeared immediately.
