With the new United Cup The new tennis season starts in Australia. Alexander Zverev is fit again after recovering from injury. We provide answers to the most important questions about the team competition.

What is the United Cup?

The Hopman Cup ended with the 2018 and 2019 editions, in the finals of which Team Germany failed against Switzerland. From 2020 to 2022 it was replaced by the ATP Cup, which is now succeeded by the United Cup.

The tournament is part of the ATP and WTA tours. Men’s, women’s and mixed matches will be played. The $15 million tournament will run from December 29, 22 to January 8, 23. It is a hard court tournament that is held outdoors because of the summer temperatures.

Where is the United Cup held?

Like its predecessor, the United Cup will be played at the Queensland Tennis Center in Brisbane, the Perth Arena and the NSW Tennis Center in Sydney. The semi-finals and finals will be held in Sydney only. Eight days after the United Cup final, the Australian Open begins in Melbourne (January 16-29).

Which tennis pros participate in Australia?

18 nations qualified for the six groups based on the world rankings of their best players. Russia and Belarus are excluded for political reasons.

What is the format of the United Cup?

In the preliminary round (“round robin“), three nations are involved in two groups at each venue. Two women and two men and one Mixed team matches. The winners will then be determined between the two winners of the groups in each venue. The three winning nations plus the best runner-up then carry out the final round in Sydney.

Tennis professionals Laura Siegemund, Jule Niemeier, Anna-Lena Friedsam, Julia Lohoff, Alexander Zverev, Oscar Otte, Daniel Altmaier and Fabian Fallert will represent Germany under the direction of captain Mischa Zverev. Germany’s opponents in Group C are the USA and the Czech Republic.
